Primordial Spirituality and Divinities, its Origin in Africa
African cultures have always held beliefs of a Supreme being, a force greater than the universe and the creator of all things to include the earth.
This supreme entity is involved in day-to-day human life by way of lessor beings of superpowers. The Supreme power is neither male nor female (no he nor she),
but is the all-in-all which encompasses everything.
The Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria refer to these super powerful beings as Orishas. The Orishas (known and referred to as Vodun), are also respected by the Edo of southeastern Nigeria, the Ewe of Ghana, Benin, and
Togo; and the Fon of Benin. The feminine energies (Powers) of the power of earth, fire, rain (water), and wind are the most respected.

Most often associated with softness, stillness, and an overarching calmness, divine feminine energy is
related to the compassion we hold in our hearts. Angel healer and life coach, Anjali Tyagi says, “Divine feminine energy is a spiritual

remember, however, that the divine feminine or masculine energies are not associated with any particular gender or sex. According to
Director of the Atmantan Wellness Centre, Dr Sharmilee Kapur, they co-exist within every being and everything—much like the

The underlying spiritual concept of the Orishas is about the same among the people of West Africa. In Vodun and the Orishas are the
personification of the natural forces. Any element of the natural world that has useful functions for human beings are Orishas.
The Orishas are the source of peace between humanity and the forces (Vodun) of the natural world, as they controls that which humans cannot
control. These consist of the earth with her wind, rivers, lakes, mountains, trees, and fire.
Each of these spiritual forces has their own superpower which are designed to work
together to help all life on Earth, its inhabitants as well as its elements. They are ara orun (people of heaven). Within the forces of the universe is intellect and consciousness and wisdom; thus, they are referred to
as "Sky People", "Father Sky" and "Mother Earth" by many Indigenous people around the planet.

"An orisha may be said to be a deity. Yet defining
an orisha as a deity does not do justice to the concept, in large part because the term deity often suggests a sort of anthropomorphic
supernatural entity. An orisha may be said to arise when a divine power to command and make things happen converges with a natural force,
a deified ancestor, and an object that witnesses and supports that convergence and alignment. An orisha, therefore, is a complex
multidimensional unity linking people, objects, and powers."
