Patriotism - Patriot for World Peace!

Patriot for World Peace: Thoughts on Patriotism and American Patriotism

By Sherwood Lummus

Patriotism

Is patriotism strictly an American thing?
Can one be a patriot for/towards world peace?
Can one be a patriot for World unity without American imperialism?

Can one understand a thing and then disagree because it does not apply to them?
Should one agree with politics if the things in question are not in their best interest?
If one push for world peace, push Americans (the people), towards world peace, would that be anti-American?

Can people actually reach a unity with a two party system?
How about a one party system, the American party?
With such a system, there can be no divide among party lines, each person would have to be clear and present a clear discourse as to how they could best Serve the American people.
There would be no room for political double talk.

The problem is not that people can't understand, and that is regardless of their skin color; the problem is that the political system hide behind double talk and doublespeak.

The real kicker is, should I, or anyone, regardless of skin color, gender, of spiritual discipline, love America and be passive about America's evils? If so, why aren't the Republicans passive towards the Democrats, or the Democrats passive towards the Republicans?

If a person love people, any people, wouldn't it be more patriotic to push for Truth and Righteousness in every facet of society?

Why I Joined the Army

I joined the Army for personal reasons. It was to get money for college education, that is what was on my mind. But, I soon realized there was a higher power involved in my joining the Army.

I knew the reasons behind America's involvement in the Vietnam war. My last two years of high school was full of bad dreams about that war, dreams of climbing out my mother's bedroom window and landing in Canada to escape going to war.

I was brought up to be a conscientious objector, for spiritual reasons as well as knowing the history behind what America has done to the Africans in America (Civil War, and other wars) and to the Native Americans who helped her fight her wars, then renege on the promises made to them/us. So, I did not go into the Army and combat blind to the reality of what I was getting into.

There was a higher spiritual power directing my path. There were things which I needed to experience and learn, which could not have been learnt any other way. I also knew that I was protected by this higher power, therefore, I was not afraid in Vietnam. While I was there, I saw the impact which I made on other soldiers and on some of the Vietnamese people - it was a two-way cultural exchange.

Everywhere that I have gone, the higher power has placed someone with me who could mentor me and help me walk the right path. It has mostly been 33rd and a third degree Masons. Different ones before I joined the Army. One in Vietnam, and several after returning to the States.

Being a first born son in a Hebrew/Jewish family, I have a higher duty than simply being an American patriot. There is also the higher calling of my Native American ancestry, which is also connected with the/my Crypto Judaic heritage that drives me towards a higher purpose than simply voting in the political system. It is all about righting the wrongs and providing a path for people to reconnect with the universal forces of the cosmos.

Therefore, I have to learn, by necessity, everything I can, about everything that I can, then see their connectedness (the fact of being and feeling socially, emotionally, spiritually, and professionally linked), and making the best of it, for myself and for all people.

Those things use to seem complicated to me when I was younger, now, it is simply what it is, and I take it in stride.

A good friend of mine said to me; "When you decided to join the Army and piloted a helicopter in a war zone your motives weren’t questioned. You did your thing and in the eyes of many Americans you were and are a Patriot. You performed a duty that likely saved the lives of many and did so at the behest of your country. You are a Patriot dude !. Simple as that. My hat is off to you as a fellow Patriot even though we might have differing concepts of the term."

I would love to see more patriots fighting for world peace. Not the type of fighting that militaries do, but the fighting with words and actions that promote harmony between/within humanity! There are so many "issues" involved that it would literally take writing a book in order to cover all of the truly complicated matters. While one can really only deal with one issue at a time, here is an important issue to start with - the idea of what it means to be 'Black". Until all people, globally, come to understand that the term 'black' is just as negative as the 'N' word, there will be little to no chance of bringing about world peace.

Conclusion

In light of the up-coming presidential election 2024 in America, there is much talk about patriotism. I wrote the above because on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, voters in each state and the District of Columbia will choose electors to the Electoral College. Those electors will then elect a president and vice president for a term of four years. I expect that Ms Kamala Harris would make a great president. However, we need a better system of electing World Leaders!
