The Rush or High associated extreme sports
The rush or high associated with these activities may not be due to adrenaline being released as a response to fear, but, more-so due to increased levels of dopamine, endorphins and serotonin because of the high level of physical exertion. The potential of various extraordinary human experiences, many of which parallel those found in activities such as meditation, may also be an important part of the extreme sport experience.
Extreme Sports / Traditional Sports
In a traditional sporting event, athletes compete against each other under controlled circumstances. However, extreme sports differ from traditional sports due to the higher number of inherently uncontrollable variables.
Extreme sports can take place in the air, on land, and in the water
Air
Air extreme sports are such sports as: BASE jumping, bungee jumping, gliding, hang gliding, high wire, ski jumping, sky diving, sky surfing, and sky flying.
Land
Land extreme sports are such sports as: indoor climbing, adventure racing, aggressive inline skating, BMX, caving, extreme motocross, extreme skiing, freestyle skiing, land and ice yachting, mountain biking, mountain boarding, outdoor climbing, sandboarding, skateboarding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, speed biking, speed skiing, scootering and street luge.
Water
Water extreme sports are such sports as: barefoot water skiing, cliff diving, free-diving, jet skiing, open water swimming, powerboat racing, round the world yacht racing, scuba diving, snorkeling, speed sailing, surfing, wakeboarding, whitewater kayaking, windsurfing.
Air - BASE jumping
BASE jumping (also written as B.A.S.E jumping), is an activity that employs a parachute to jump from fixed objects. BASE or B.A.S.E. is an acronym that stands for the four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump. B - buildings, A - antennae, S - spans such as bridges, and E - earth such as cliffs.
Air - Bungee jumping
Bungee jumping or "Bungy" jumping is an activity that involves jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord (a factory-produced braided shock cord). When the person jumps, the cord stretches, as the cord snaps back, the jumper flies upwards again and continues to oscillate up and down until all the energy is dissipated from the cord.
Air - Hang gliding
Hang gliding is an air sport in which a pilot flies an unmotorized, light foot-launchable aircraft called a hang glider. The hang gliders, also known as Delta plane or Deltaplane, are usually made of an aluminium alloy or composite-framed fabric wing. The pilot is suspended in a harness from the airframe, and exercises control by shifting body weight in opposition to a control frame. However, some may include modern aircraft flight control systems.
