Drums are at the heart of sub-Saharan African cultures. The Talking Drums of Africa bring a level of energy that is incomparable.

Talking drums are used widely across West Africa as a means of communication. It is found in Ghana among the Ashanti, in Nigeria among the Yoruba and the Hausa people. The style may vary, but the overall shape is double-headed and carved into an hours-glass figure.

They are made from very light weight West African wood, with loosely strung thonging which is squeezed to give a range of rhythmic pitches from very high female sound to a low male pitch. This flexibility of pitch is very conversational.

Drums have an important presence in all aspects of African life. The drum is used at birth, in ancestor worship, rites of passage, healing, storytelling, warrior rites and initiation, at the time of death, and as an an important means of communication over long distances. The drums are made of a variety of materials - wood, bamboo, calabash and other gourds, etc.

Djembe is a powerful "healing drum". It dates back to the 12th century days of the Mali Empire. It is the drum of the Mandingo People of West Africa. It has a broad tonal range. Djembe can go from a deep resounding bass to thunder crack slap, with a dynamic range of a whisper to a roar.

Carved of woods of various types and weights. This drum is singled-ended goblet shaped that has a wide head usually made of goatskin and strung with rope.

Djembe Drums are a traditional African musical instrument, and this entire instrument is handmade. The drum surface is animal hide/skin, and the base is made of sturdy carved wood encircled with plain or braided rope. Some have designs etched into the base as well as fabric trim along the top. These drums are popular in reggae and other cultural musical productions. In West Africa, nearly all ceremonies are accompanied by the timeless and distinctive melody of drums. Approx. 16-18" tall, 10" diameter. Made in Senegal.
