Spirituality and Science seeking Balance

Can we find balance between Science and Spirituality?

Every since the human family has been human beings, we have experienced "science" and "spirituality". Each individual has their own unique experiential reality in each of these disciplines.

Science existed with in the frame work of the human mind and experiences of the human family long before it became codified into its present form. The same with spirituality, it too existed in the human experience long before it became codified into the present day concepts of "religion".

Through out the (TaNaKh), the (Sutras (Sanskrit; Pali Sutta)), the (Vedas and the Upanishads), and (African Spirituality (which goes by many names)), as well as many other lesser known texts, we can learn the science and spirituality of the human family - from earlier time to this present time.

Religion has its origins in "culture" and its conflicts were actually conflicts between different cultures. All cultures had their share of "science" and "spirituality".

Most, if not all, of the earlier scientists held a balance for science and spirituality. It seems that after the European Enlightenment period, science came into conflict with "religion" (not necessarily spirituality).

At the core of any conflict between people, past and present, is a difference of opinion of culture. As the European culture spread through out the globe, so too did the conflict between science and religion (culture) spread on a global scale.

In these modern times, the religious people claim exclusive rights to "spirituality" and spirituality is the vanguard of morality. The scientists, through the modern concepts of science, attempt to fight the religious by relegating the spiritual as simply a deception of the mind. The religious see this as an attempt to destroy morality.

The solution: there has to be a return to the "balance to the universe" much like what is presented in the movie "The Dark Crystal".

Take for example the Native American and African/African American cultures which are seen as religion with a division between the supernatural which is ruled by one or multiple deities. The Native American spirituality and the original African cultures does not separate the two concepts in any real way. The spiritual (or supernatural) world is the same thing as the real world. This concept seems to hold sway to most, if not all, of the ancient cultures world wide. It was also the way of the early European cultures before the "European Enlightenment".

There are many movements today, through out the various cultures on this planet, seeking to return to the balance of the two worlds, spiritual and physical.

If we take into account that the core meaning of "science" is "knowledge", and we seek the true knowledge of "Spirituality" and "Spirit", we can find that balance between Spirituality and Science.

When we take a close look at Quantum physics and spirituality we see that they are very much connected to each other. The only separation is in false conceptions of the two, created by faulty language.

Quantum Revelation: A Radical Synthesis of Science and Spirituality

Quantum Revelation: A Radical Synthesis of Science and Spirituality

"The Quantum Revelation is mind-blowing." ―Sting To say that quantum physics is the greatest scientific discovery of all time is not an exaggeration. In their discovery of the quantum realm, the physics community stumbled upon a genuine multifaceted revelation which can be likened to a profound spiritual treasure―a heretofore undreamed of creative power―hidden within our own mind.

Quantum physics unequivocally points out that the study of the universe and the study of consciousness are inseparably linked, which is to say that ultimate progress in the one will be impossible without progress in the other. Einstein declared that what it reveals is so immensely important that “it should be everyone’s concern.” Yet few of us in the general public truly understand how the game-changing discoveries of the past century not only relate to our day-to-day lives, but also give us insights into the nature of reality and our place within it.

Written for readers with no physics background, Paul Levy’s latest book, The Quantum Revelation: A Radical Synthesis of Science and Spirituality is for those who have heard that quantum physics is a fascinating subject but don’t quite understand how or why. Levy contemplates the deeper philosophical underpinnings of quantum physics, exploring the fundamental questions it provokes: What does it mean that quantum theory has discovered that there is no such thing as “objective reality?” How are we participating―via our consciousness―in creating our experience of a reality that quantum theory itself describes as “dreamlike?”

What are the implications for us in our day-to-day lives that―as quantum theory reveals―what we call reality is more like a dream that we had previously imagined? The Quantum Revelation is unique in how it synthesizes science and spirituality so as to reveal and explore the dreamlike nature of reality.

It is a book not just for people interested in quantum theory, but for anyone who is interested in waking up and dreaming lucidly, be it in our night dreams or our waking life.

The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality

The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality

Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Niels Bohr, Einstein. Their insights shook our perception of who we are and where we stand in the world, and in their wake have left an uneasy coexistence: science vs. religion, faith vs. empirical inquiry. Which is the keeper of truth? Which is the true path to understanding reality?

After forty years of study with some of the greatest scientific minds, as well as a lifetime of meditative, spiritual, and philosophic study, the Dalai Lama presents a brilliant analysis of why all avenues of inquiry—scientific as well as spiritual—must be pursued in order to arrive at a complete picture of the truth. Through an examination of Darwinism and karma, quantum mechanics and philosophical insight into the nature of reality, neurobiology and the study of consciousness, the Dalai Lama draws significant parallels between contemplative and scientific examinations of reality.

This breathtakingly personal examination is a tribute to the Dalai Lama’s teachers—both of science and spirituality. The legacy of this book is a vision of the world in which our different approaches to understanding ourselves, our universe, and one another can be brought together in the service of humanity.

Science vs. Religion: The Search for a Rational Approach

Science vs. Religion: The Search for a Rational Approach

The author examines both science and religion in some detail and from a variety of standpoints. A life-long educator, he indicates many avenues for further reading, so that no one has to simply accept whatever his family or community traditions may have proposed.

One sticking point in most discussions of religion vs. science is that few of us really have enough information about both positions - and the myriad hybrid beliefs in between - in order to make a proper evaluation. As a professor of medicine and an avid investigator of these questions, Dr. Guido Perez offers some background and guidance. The author explores the basics of theism and today's largest religions, and gives a solid grounding in the facts and theoretical basis for evolution and the scientific approach to knowledge.

He then explores a possible place to stand in, both morally and intellectually grounded, while we puzzle out our existence: a rational belief system that accounts for what we can account for, while recognizing those mysteries and existential questions we humans just can't seem to stop asking.

Dr. Perez proposes a rational belief system grounded in natural science and humanism, an approach where morality comes naturally - not because we fear divine punishment but because we inherently understand what is good for humanity.

The Language God Talks: On Science and Religion

The Language God Talks: On Science and Religion

"More years ago than I care to reckon up, I met Richard Feynman." So begins THE LANGUAGE GOD TALKS, Herman Wouk's gem on navigating the divide between science and religion. In one rich, compact volume, Wouk draws on stories from his life as well as on key events from the 20th century to address the eternal questions of why we are here, what purpose faith serves, and how scientific fact fits into the picture. He relates wonderful conversations he's had with scientists such as Feynman, Murray Gell-Mann, Freeman Dyson, and Steven Weinberg, and brings to life such pivotal moments as the 1969 moon landing and the Challenger disaster. Brilliantly written, THE LANGUAGE GOD TALKS is a scintillating and lively investigation and a worthy addition to the literature.
